The risk of being accused of “greenwashing” is now a major concern for many companies. Greenwashing is an ill-defined concept, but is nevertheless increasingly a source of lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny – and more of both is expected. It poses reputational, regulatory and litigation risks that companies must be prepared for. While the risks are always context-specific – varying by jurisdiction, sector and product – there are common themes. Here we explore these themes in more detail and offer suggestions for how organizations can think about mitigating greenwashing risk.
